2014 IWCA Rules

If you are going to compete in any of the IWCA divisions listed below, you must be an IWCA member. Prior to entering the competition, it is the responsibility of the entrant-carver to be fully aware of all rules. Answers to questions concerning IWCA rules should be obtained by contacting the IWCA. Questions concerning the ECWG divisions should be directed to individuals on the contacts page. Note: A carving can be entered into one division only – whether it is IWCA or ECWG.

Division F East Carolina Wildfowl Guild North Carolina Decoy Carving Championship Division

Entry Fees:

$50.00

First in Show $1000.00 Purchase Award

Judging Rules
1. The competition bird will be a Mallard Hen decorative style gunning decoy painted to the maximum of the carver’s ability.
2. All entries shall be made of wood. Glass eyes and plastic inserts of elongated tail feathers on birds such as the Oldsquaw and Pintail are accepted.
3. All entries will be floated and must self right from any position.
4. All entries may be painted to the artist’s highest ability.
5. No burning or other fine texturing will be allowed. Chip carving delineation of feather groupings, bill detail and elevated primaries will be allowed. Durable undercutting will be accepted.
6. All rules and regulations of a style gunning decoy division will be observed.
7. Purchase award of $1000.00 for the first place winner. The winning entry becomes the property of the East Carolina Wildfowl Guild.
8. Entries into this Division shall not be entered in any other Division at this year’s event.
9. Stippling, sponging or combing will be allowed.
Note: This Division is open to all individuals, not just North Carolina residents.

 


Division G East Carolina Wildfowl Guild Decorative Head Carving Competition

Judging Rules
Greater Scaup Drake Bust will be at least one inch of chest. The head must be textured, burned, and painted to the maximum of the carver’s ability. The maximum height of the carving may not exceed 6 inches, including the base. Only two honorable mentions will be awarded.

Division J East Carolina Wildfowl Guild The Pamlico River Gunning Pairs Competition
Sponsored by Mike and Julie Hicks, Washington, N.C.

Entry Fees:

$10.00 per Pair

Third in Show: $50.00

Judging Rules
1. Must be any diving duck.
2. Decoys must be rigged with a minimum of 12 inches anchor line for gang line clip.
3. Traditional gunning rules apply.
4. Decoys can be constructed of wood, cork, or stretched canvas over wire.
5. The competition may be judged in the Pamlico River at the Washington Waterfront.
6. The decoys may be set and picked up by boat.
7. Decoys cannot be moved between divisions.

 


Division K East Carolina Wildfowl Guild Tar River Annual Decoy Event (T.R.A.D.E.)

Entry Fees:

$5.00

Judging Rules
1. Entries must be a wood Ruddy Duck Drake measuring no longer than 4 inches from breast to tail with a weight and anchor line.
2. Pattern, attitude, and paint scheme may be the carver’s choice within the guidelines of the current IWCA working decoy rules. Imagination is encouraged, however the basic rules must be adhered to and specifics of medium, size, species and sex are met and the entry represents the scaled down version of a working decoy that could be used by a waterfowl hunter.
3. Prior to floating all entries will be prejudged for correct measurement and have the anchor line with weight removed. Also, the judge will look at the workmanship, the accuracy of scale and compliance of all rules.
4. Entries must self right and float with the proper attitude.
5. Entries disqualified at prejudging will be placed in the tank after the 3rd best of show is chosen.
6. Everyone who enters will take home someone else’s entry.
7. Only One entry per carver.
NOTE: The ECWG requests entrants in this division to submit a “practice bird” if at all possible which will be auctioned to help support the festival. Consideration of this will be appreciated.

 


Division L East Carolina Wildfowl Guild The O’Neal’s Drug Store Carolina Gunning Decoy Division

Division M East Carolina Wildfowl Guild Contemporary Antique Decoy Division

First in Show: $100.00
Second in Show: $50.00
Third in Show: $25.00

Judging Rules
1. Entries are to represent the appearance of decoys prior to 1950 and would have been used for hunting. Decoys are to be made to look old by the carving, painting, or materials used. Entries may be made of canvas, cork or wood. Glass eyes are allowed.
2. Birds will be judged as one group-no division of species, not floated.
3. Entries can be from any geographical region but must be the carver’s original design and interpretation of an old decoy.
4. Only one entry per carver.

 


Division N North Carolina Songbird Division

$40.00 per entry

First in Show: $500.00 Purchase Award
Second in Show: $150.00
Third in Show: $100.00

Judging Rules
1. Entries in this division must be songbirds found in North Carolina.
2. Entries in this division will not be placed in any other division.
3. All entries should be painted to the artist’s highest ability.
4. Entries will be judged according to IWCA rules for Decorative Life-Size Non-Floating Division.
5. Purchase award of $500.00 for the first place winner.

Mail in instructions:
a. Mailed entries are accepted for all Divisions.
b. Complete entry form. Be specific to naming species.
c. Include sufficient postage, cost of insurance (amount you wish piece to be insured for), and a shipping label.
d. Entry deadline February 6, 2014.
e. For your protection properly pack pieces; e.g., double boxes. We will not be responsible for damaged pieces.
